Development of ICF Core Sets for Bipolar Disorders(BD)

The project "Developing the ICF Core Sets for Bipolar Disorders" begun in the Summer 2007 as a collaboration among the ICF Research Branch in Munich; the Autonoma University in Madrid, the WHO and the Bipolar Disorder Programme of the Institut Clínic de Neurosciences at the Hospital Clinic from the Barcelona University.
The protocol article "Developing core sets for persons with Bipolar Disorder based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health" was published in Bipolar Disorders Magazine.

Expert Survey
An expert survey will be conducted online to gather opinions from health professionals around the world about the most important and relevant aspects to bipolar disorder. We are currently recruiting participants and after the first invitation letters were sent in collaboration with the International Society for Bipolar Disorders, we received positive answers from about 50 persons from the six world regions according the World Health Organization's classification.
We would like to take this opportunity to invite all experts willing to participate to contact us at carolina.avila@uam.es.

Systematic Literature Review
An electronic search was conducted in MEDLINE® and PsycINFO® databases for articles on bipolar disorders published between 2000 and 2006 (both included) and the abstracts of all the retrieved articles were screened for inclusion according to pre-agreed criteria.

Empirical Studies
Data on patients with bipolar disorder is being collected at the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona (Prof. Vieta) and the Hospital Universitario de la Princesa in Madrid (Prof. Ayuso-Mateos).

Qualitative Studies
A decision was made to use individual interviews with euthymic bipolar I and II patients to address the patients' perspective. A psychiatrist was formed to hold the interviews and we are waiting for the ethics approval to hold the interviews at a hospital in Madrid. We expect to start the data collection during the month of January.
