Gerold
Stucki, MD, MS is professor and chairman of the Department
of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University
of Munich, Germany. He is also director of the ICF Research
Branch of WHO Collaborating Center for the Family of International
Classifications, Germany (DMIDI). He serves as the liaison
officer for the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation
Medicine (ISPRM) to WHO and he is active in a number of scientific
societies and boards internationally and nationally.
After his clinical training in physical medicine and rehabilitation
and rheumatology in Switzerland from 1985-1992 he completed
a research fellowship at the Harvard Medical School from 1992-1994
and obtained a Masters of Science in Health Policy and Management
from the Harvard School of Public Health and a Diploma in
Biostatistics and Epidemiology from the University of McGill,
Montréal, Canada.
As the head of the institute of physical medicine in Zurich
from 1996 to 1999 and currently as the professor and chair
for physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University
of Munich he has initiated and lead efforts to change the
organizational structures and processes towards a more patient-
and client-centered care provision with multidisciplinary
teams. He has developed and implemented comprehensive programs
for rehabilitation in the subacute setting and for patients
with chronic pain and musculoskeletal conditions. Recognizing
the potential and the need for the multidisciplinary approach
in rehabilitation he has initiated multidisciplinary research
units first in Zurich and now in Munich including the unit
for rehabilitation science and economics and the ICF Research
Branch of the WHO Collaborating Center for the Family of International
Classifications (DIMDI), Germany.
His research interests focus on health services and outcomes
research and the evaluation of medical, surgical and rehabilitation
interventions in musculoskeletal conditions and rehabilitation.
He is particularly interested in the development of outcome
measures and assessment-based clinical quality management
programs for rehabilitation and prevention in the context
of multi- and interdisciplinary care provision. In Switzerland
he has initiated, developed and implemented a nationwide program
for the comprehensive management of patients with rheumatoid
arthritis, SCQM. Currently, he is leading an international
effort in cooperation with WHO and a number of international
organizations to develop ICF Core Sets (International Classification
of Functioning, Disability and Health) for medicine and rehabilitation.
The ICF Core Sets are developed at the ICF Research Branch
of WHO Collaborating Center for the Family of International
Classifications (DIMDI), Germany which works closely with
a number of other WHO collaborating centers for the family
of classifications worldwide. The ICF and the ICF Core Sets
will form the universal basis for the assessment of functioning
and health for medical practice, clinical studies, health
statistics and health surveys. The ICF Core Sets are also
the basis for the Rehab-Cycle, an internet-based assessment
and evaluation program for rehabilitation.
